Wouldn't It be Better to Wait Until We Are Sure?

Politicians discussing climate change.

Sure of what?  We are sure that anthropogenicemissions of carbon dioxide, and other greenhouse gases, are building up in the atmosphere and oceans, and will cause serious problems for ourselves and future generations. We are not totally sure how fast the temperature will rise, nor can we predict precisely the consequences - although we have some very good ideas.

But to wait before taking action is a bit like being parked on the railroad tracks with a train bearing down on you and not wanting to move until you are certain how extensive the damages will be to your car.
